Victor VCT0330-0005 Cutting Tip 101 1 Brass Acetylene 3/4 Inch

The Victor VCT0330-0005 is a 101 cutting tip, size 1, acetylene, brass, 3/4 inch cutting capacity.

The 3/4 inch capacity is the specification and it is worth being clear that a capacity figure is a maximum rather than an optimum.

A tip rated to 3/4 inch will cut 3/4 inch plate. It will cut 1/2 inch better — cleaner kerf, less dross, less heat into the plate. Running any tip at the very top of its range produces the worst cut it is capable of, and the tell is dross: a hard slag bead welded to the underside of the cut that has to be chipped off, which is frequently more work than the cut was.

So the tip is chosen for the plate on the bench, and a fabricator changes tips through a job rather than running one for everything.

The other thing that governs cut quality and gets blamed on the tip: cleanliness. A cutting tip's orifices are precise, and spatter, slag, or a knock deforms them. A tip with an out-of-round oxygen orifice cuts a bevel and there is no setting that fixes it. Tip cleaners are cheap and nobody uses them until the cuts are unusable.

Oxy-fuel burns steel rather than melting it. It will not cut aluminium or stainless.

Acetylene: never above 15 psi.
