The Victor VCT0330-0004 is a 101 cutting tip, size 00, acetylene, brass, 1/4 inch cutting capacity.

The material distinction across this range deserves explaining, because the catalogue carries the same 101 tips in both brass and copper under different part number series and does not say why.

Copper conducts heat better than brass. On a cutting tip that matters — the tip sits in the preheat flames and it has to shed that heat rather than accumulate it, or the orifices distort. Copper's conductivity is why torch tips have traditionally been made of it.

Brass is tougher and it machines more easily. A brass tip survives being dropped and handled better than a copper one, which on a tip that gets knocked around a fabrication shop is a real advantage.

So there is a genuine trade and the customer should be told which they are getting and why.

At size 00 with a 1/4 inch capacity, this is a small tip.

The process is worth knowing. Oxy-fuel does not melt steel — the preheat flames bring it to ignition temperature and then an oxygen jet burns the iron. The reaction is exothermic, so the steel supplies much of its own heat. That is why oxy-fuel cuts steel and will not cut aluminium or stainless.
