Note a contradiction in this catalogue worth resolving: this range lists a 101 tip in size 3 with a 2 inch capacity in brass, and another 101 tip in size 3 with a 2-1/2 inch capacity in copper, under a different part number series. Same series name, same size, different material and different stated capacity. One of those figures is wrong, or the series designation is doing more work than the data shows. Verify against Victor.

The tip size and cutting capacity relationship is the whole selection table, and it is worth stating: 000 cuts about 1/8 inch, 00 about 1/4, 0 about 1/2, 1 about 3/4, 2 about 1 to 1-1/2, 3 about 2 to 2-1/2, 4 about 3.

Oxy-fuel cutting works by oxidation rather than melting. The preheat flames bring the steel to ignition temperature, then a jet of pure oxygen burns the iron — and the reaction is exothermic, so the steel supplies much of its own heat. The tip's oxygen orifice is sized to that plate thickness.

A tip too small does not cut through. A tip too large blows a wide ragged kerf.
