Product Highlights
Description
The Victor VCT0323-0251 is an MFA heating nozzle, for acetylene and hydrogen, heating type, tip size 6, one piece.
A heating nozzle is a different instrument from a welding nozzle and the difference is the flame's shape.
A welding tip produces a single concentrated cone: all the heat in one small place, which is what forms a puddle. A heating nozzle — a rosebud — produces a broad, multi-flame pattern that spreads heat over an area. It is not trying to melt anything. It is trying to raise the temperature of a mass of metal.
That is what preheating is, and it is a metallurgical control rather than a convenience. Steel that cools too fast through the heat affected zone forms hard brittle martensite, which combines with welding hydrogen to produce cracks that appear hours or days after the weld passed inspection. Preheat slows the cooling and prevents it.
Heating nozzles also do the other half of hot work: freeing seized fasteners, bending, straightening, and shrinking.
The consequence of the broad flame is gas consumption. A rosebud eats acetylene, and a big one can draw more than a cylinder can safely deliver — acetylene cannot be withdrawn faster than about a tenth of the cylinder's capacity per hour without pulling acetone out with it. Large heating jobs need a manifold.
Never exceed 15 psi.
