A gas lens is one of the genuinely worthwhile upgrades in TIG welding and the mechanism is worth understanding.

A standard TIG collet body dumps argon into the cup, where it swirls turbulently. Turbulent gas mixes with the surrounding air, and air in the shielding is what causes a dirty, grey, contaminated weld — particularly on stainless and aluminium, where oxygen is unforgiving.

A gas lens replaces the collet body with a stack of fine mesh screens. The gas passes through them and comes out laminar — a smooth, column-like flow rather than a swirl. That column shields properly, and it keeps shielding at a distance.

Which is what buys the real advantage: stickout. With a gas lens, the tungsten can extend much further from the cup and still be shielded. That means seeing the puddle, reaching into corners and fillets, and welding joints that a standard setup cannot reach at all.

It also uses less gas for better coverage, because none is wasted on turbulence.

Stubby is the other half: a short back cap and short consumables for working in tight spaces where a full-length torch will not fit.
