Product Highlights
Description
The Oatey OAT23001 is a silver lead-free plumbing wire solder, 1 lb, .117 inch diameter, formulated for plumbing and potable water line applications, melting range 420°F to 460°F.
Lead-free is not a preference on potable water — it is the law, and that is the most important thing about this product.
Lead solder was standard in plumbing for generations, and it leaches into drinking water. US federal law prohibits lead solder in potable water systems, and it has for decades. The old 50/50 tin-lead solder still exists for non-potable work and putting it in a drinking water line is both illegal and a genuine health matter, particularly for children.
Which means a plumber's solder roll is a compliance item and it should not be ambiguous. Keep lead-free and leaded solder physically separated and labelled.
The 420 to 460°F melting range is the working figure and it is worth understanding as a range rather than a point. Lead-free solders have a plastic range — a span between where they start to melt and where they flow fully. Inside that range the solder is pasty rather than liquid, and moving the joint there produces a cold, porous, leaking joint. The rule is to heat the fitting rather than the solder, let capillary action pull it in, and not move the joint until it is set.
Applications include potable water, copper tube, and plumbing.
