The Victor VCT0323-0130 is a W series welding nozzle, for acetylene and hydrogen, general purpose welding and preheating, tip size 4, one piece.

The stated use — welding and preheating — is worth pulling apart, because they are different jobs done with the same nozzle.

Welding needs a concentrated flame in one place: a puddle formed, filler added, and the heat controlled tightly so the metal either side stays solid.

Preheating is the opposite. It is bringing a mass of metal up to temperature before welding, and it is done because cooling rate is what determines whether a weld cracks. Steel that cools too fast through the heat affected zone forms hard brittle martensite, and combined with the hydrogen that welding introduces, that produces cracks appearing hours or days after the joint passed inspection.

So preheat is a metallurgical control rather than a convenience, and the temperature is specified in the procedure — verified with a temperature indicating crayon rather than guessed at.

A general purpose nozzle does both, which is why a size 4 is a useful size to have: enough heat for meaningful preheat on a section, controllable enough to weld with.

Acetylene's absolute rule: never above 15 psi. The gas decomposes explosively above that, with no oxygen needed.
