The dual gas rating — acetylene and hydrogen — is unusual and worth explaining.

Hydrogen is a fuel gas that most shops never see, and where it appears it is generally for a specific reason: it burns very clean and it produces no carbon, which matters when welding or brazing materials that carbon would contaminate. Aluminium and some non-ferrous work uses it. It also burns hotter than most alternatives with oxygen.

The catch is that a hydrogen flame is nearly invisible. Like methanol, it produces almost no visible light — a torch that is lit looks like a torch that is not, and people find out by touch. Anyone running hydrogen needs to know that before they light it and not after.

Acetylene is the common gas and the rule that governs it is absolute: never above 15 psi. Acetylene decomposes explosively above that pressure without needing oxygen at all, which is why the regulator is red-lined and why the cylinder is packed with a porous mass and acetone rather than being hollow.

Tip size 1 is a heat rating, matched to material thickness.
