That matters more here than on most consumables, because MIG gun consumables are a matched system. Nozzle, diffuser, and contact tip are designed together, and mixing series produces two failures that get misdiagnosed for weeks: gas leaking out of a joint that should be sealed, which is porosity, and poor electrical contact, which is burnback.

Both get blamed on the wire, the gas, or the welder.

The diffuser itself does two jobs. It turns the incoming gas stream into an even flow around the wire — uneven flow means one side of the puddle is shielded and the other is not. And it carries welding current to the contact tip, which means a loose or corroded diffuser makes heat exactly where heat causes burnback.

It is a consumable. Spatter blocks the ports.
