Product Highlights
Description
The Thermal Dynamics THD9-8211 is an 80A standoff cutting tip for SL60 and SL100 torches.
Reading this against the 60A tip in the same range shows the system: the amperage rating is the tip's identity, not a suggestion.
Plasma cutting works by constricting an arc through a small orifice, which is what turns a diffuse arc into a concentrated jet. That orifice diameter is matched to the current. At the correct amperage, the swirling gas keeps the arc centred and off the copper. Too much current for the orifice and the arc touches metal — the tip erodes fast, the hole goes out of round, and the machine starts cutting a bevel instead of a square edge.
Too little current is not free either: an underpowered arc through a large orifice is unstable and cuts poorly.
So the tip follows the amperage the machine is set to, and changing the setting means changing the tip.
The electrode wears in parallel, and it is the part people ignore. An electrode's hafnium insert erodes into a pit, and a worn electrode destabilises the arc and takes a new tip with it. Change them as a set.
Standoff means the tip is held off the plate rather than dragged on it. Not interchangeable with a drag tip.
