Stanley STN87-473 Adjustable Wrench 12"

The Stanley STN87-473 is a 12 inch adjustable wrench.

Note the estimated ship date embedded in the source description — inventory data in a content field, and it should live in a lead time field instead.

At 12 inches the adjustable wrench's structural weakness starts to matter, and it is worth being direct about it.

The tool has a fixed jaw cast into the head and a movable jaw riding on a worm screw. The fixed jaw is solid metal. The movable jaw is held by a small screw in a slot, and it is dramatically the weaker of the two. A 12 inch handle applies serious torque, and the direction of that torque decides where it goes.

Pull so the force presses against the fixed jaw and the load goes into solid metal. Pull the other way and it all goes through the worm screw, which flexes, which opens the jaw, which lets the wrench slip and rounds the fastener.

That is why adjustable wrenches have a reputation for chewing nuts, and it is not the tool's fault. It is why the jaw is on the side it is on.

The second rule: set the jaw tight against the flats before pulling. Play is what lets a wrench cam off a corner.

Verify the specification — the source is thin.
