A soft face hammer exists because a steel hammer damages what it strikes, and sometimes the thing being struck is the point.

Assembling machined parts, seating a bearing, tapping a casting into alignment, closing a joint on finished work — all of those need a blow, and all of them are ruined by a steel face. A dent in a mating surface is not cosmetic; it raises a burr that stops the parts seating.
