Product Highlights
Description
The Stanley STN51-616 is a hickory handle nailing hammer, curved claw, 16 oz.
Curved claw is the specification and it is the fork in the road for hammers.
A curved claw is a deep hook, and its geometry is a lever. Set the claw under a nail head, roll the hammer back on the curve, and the head rises with substantial mechanical advantage. The curve does the work — it is the reason a curved claw pulls nails better than anything else.
A rip claw is nearly straight. It pulls nails worse, and it does what a curved claw cannot: it goes into a joint. A straight claw can be driven between two boards, into a sheet, or under a batten, and used as a pry bar. That is demolition, and it is why framers carry rip claws.
So the choice is what the hammer does when it is not driving nails. Curved for building and finish work; rip for taking things apart.
At 16 oz with a hickory handle, this is the traditional general-purpose hammer. Hickory absorbs shock — the reason it survived the arrival of steel and fibreglass — and it is replaceable, which nothing else is.
Wood handles need watching. A loose head is dangerous and it happens as wood dries.
