Stanley STN30-454 Tape Measure Tape Rule Fractional Read

The Stanley STN30-454 is a tape measure with a fractional read blade.

Fractional read is the feature and it is worth explaining, because it addresses a real and slightly embarrassing problem.

A conventional tape blade marks inches, then subdivides them with graduation lines of decreasing length. Reading a measurement means counting those lines and knowing which length means what — sixteenths are the short ones, eighths are longer, quarters longer still. Most people can do it. Most people also count wrong occasionally, particularly in bad light, at arm's length, or on a ladder.

A fractional read blade prints the fractions. Instead of counting to the fifth line, the tape says 5/16.

That is not a beginner's feature. It is faster for everybody and it eliminates a class of error that costs material — a cut made to a misread measurement is a piece of timber in the offcut pile.

The trade is a busier blade. More printing means more to look at, and some people find a clean blade easier to read at distance.
