The Simonds SIM78761530 is a 7 piece Black Maxi welder file kit containing a 10 inch mill smooth, a 10 inch spot weld file, a 4 inch MIG welder nozzle file, a 14 inch pipe liner, a 12 inch half-round bastard, carbon and stainless steel brushes, and a cloth roll pouch.

The two brushes are the detail that shows this kit was assembled by someone who welds, and the reason is worth knowing.

A carbon steel brush must never touch stainless. The bristles leave carbon steel particles embedded in the surface, and those particles rust — free iron on stainless breaks down the passive chromium oxide layer that makes stainless stainless. The result is rust bleeding out of a stainless weld weeks later, and the fabricator blames the material. Stainless gets its own brush, and that brush never touches carbon steel either.

Two brushes in a kit is a shop that understands this. One brush is a contamination problem waiting to happen.

The rest of the kit reads the same way. A MIG nozzle file is a small file shaped to clean spatter out of a gas cup — spatter buildup disturbs the shielding gas flow, and disturbed shielding produces porosity that the welder chases as a technique problem. The mill smooth is for draw filing and finishing. The pipe liner and half-round handle joint preparation.
