Simonds SIM78234100 10 Flat Bd Black Maxi Sharp

The Simonds SIM78234100 is a 10 inch flat bastard Black Maxi-Sharp file, American pattern.

Two features distinguish the Black Maxi-Sharp line and both are worth stating, because the source data says nothing about either.

The black oxide coating is the first. Simonds applies it to resist rust and corrosion and to reduce loading — the coating gives chips less to key into, so the file pins less readily and cleans more easily when it does. That matters because pinning is what ruins files: a chip lodged between teeth gets dragged across the work and scores it, and the operator files harder, which makes it worse.

The wavy tooth design is the second and it is the more interesting. Simonds cuts the teeth with a variable pattern rather than uniform spacing. Uniform teeth all engage and release together, and that regularity is what produces chatter — the file skips and rings, the surface comes out faceted, and the vibration fatigues the teeth. Varying the spacing breaks up the harmonic, which is the same principle behind variable-pitch bandsaw blades.

The result is a smoother cut and a longer life.

Bastard is the coarse grade — Simonds describes this line as excellent for rapid stock removal.

Flat files are double cut on the faces, single cut on the edges, and taper in width toward the point.
