Simonds SIM73503000 Bastard Knife File 10" American

The Simonds SIM73503000 is a bastard knife file, American pattern, 10 inches.

At 10 inches this is the largest knife file in the range, and the size is worth thinking about because it inverts the usual reason for buying a knife file.

A knife file is normally a detail tool: it goes into an acute corner too tight for anything else. That is small work. A 10 inch knife file is not entering anything tight — it is a long file with a sharp edge, and what it does is work a long acute angle with the control that only length provides.

A file cuts across its entire length in one stroke, which means a long file bridges high spots and cuts them down where a short one drops into hollows and follows them. On a dovetail slide that has to be straight along its run, that is the whole job.

So the 10 inch knife file is for machine slides, long tapered ways, and any acute corner that has to be flat along its length rather than merely clean.

Bastard is the coarse grade, and at this size it removes material quickly.

The sharp edge makes the file fragile. Never pry with it.

Fit a handle. A file this size is pushed with real force.
