Simonds SIM73501000 Smooth Knife File 6" American

The Simonds SIM73501000 is a smooth knife file, American pattern, 6 inches.

Smooth is the finishing grade and on a knife file it does something that deserves stating plainly: it is the only tool that can produce a finished surface in an acute internal corner.

That is a narrow claim and it is accurate. Abrasive paper on a stick cannot hold an angle — it follows the surface, rounds the corner, and leaves exactly the radius the fitter was trying to eliminate. A stone will not enter. A flat file's thickness fouls the wall. A knife file's tapering section goes in, and its rigid body imposes a true flat on the face it cuts.

That matters because acute corners in machinery are frequently bearing surfaces. A dovetail slide, a gib, a tapered key — these are surfaces something moves against, and a rough or radiused corner means a part that binds or rocks.

So the smooth knife file is the last cutting step in a job that has no alternative tool.

The sharp edge is what makes it work and what makes it fragile. Knife files bend and snap.

Files cut on the push stroke only. Lift on the return.
