Description
The Simonds SIM73500000 is a bastard knife file, American pattern, 6 inches.
Size on a knife file governs something specific: how deep into a slot the file can work.
A knife file's cutting section tapers toward its point, which means the usable thickness varies along the length. A 4 inch file is thin along most of its length and can enter a very narrow gap; a 6 inch file is thicker in section and reaches further in, but needs more room to enter. So the file has to match both the width of the opening and its depth.
A shop doing dovetail or die work carries several rather than one, for the same reason it carries several half rounds — they are a set of geometries, not a good-better-best ladder.
At 6 inches this is the general working knife file: enough length for a controlled stroke, thin enough for most acute corners.
The knife geometry is the point. Where two surfaces meet at less than ninety degrees, a flat file's own thickness fouls one wall before its face reaches the other. A knife file's tapering section follows the angle in.
Bastard is the coarse grade: for opening a corner, not finishing it.
Fit a handle. The tang is a bare spike.
