Simonds SIM73483500 Warding Smooth File 8" American

The Simonds SIM73483500 is a warding smooth file, American pattern, 8 inches.

Warding is a word with a specific origin and it explains the file exactly: wards are the obstructions inside a lock that a key has to be cut around. A warding file is the tool that cut them.

What that requires is thinness. A warding file is a flat file made unusually thin in section, tapering sharply toward a narrow point. That is the geometry needed to enter a narrow slot and work inside it — and nothing else in a file range can. A conventional flat file is thick enough that it simply will not go into the gap.

So the applications follow the shape: locksmithing and key fitting, narrow slots, thin keyways, letting in hardware, and any place where a file has to get into a space measured in fractions of an inch.

Smooth is the grade, which suits the work. Warding files are used for fitting rather than removal — the material coming off is a few thousandths, and the surface matters because a key or a lock component has to move against it.

The thinness that makes the file useful also makes it fragile. A warding file bends and it snaps.

Fit a handle. The tang is still a spike.
