The Simonds SIM73432500 is a square second cut file, American pattern, 10 inches.

A square file exists for corners, and corners are where every other file shape fails.

The problem is geometry. A slot, a keyway, a rectangular recess, or a square hole has an internal corner where two flat faces meet at ninety degrees. A round file cannot get into it — it leaves a radius. A flat file cannot either: its own thickness fouls one wall before its face reaches the other, and the corner stays rounded no matter how long you work at it.
