Simonds SIM73403000 Round Second Cut File 12" American

The Simonds SIM73403000 is a round second cut file, American pattern, 12 inches.

At 12 inches this is a long round file, and length on a round file buys something specific: reach and control in a deep hole.

A short round file in a deep bore has almost nothing outside the hole to hold onto, which means the operator cannot control the angle. The file wanders, cuts unevenly, and the bore comes out tapered or bell-mouthed. A long file gives the hand something to work with and lets the stroke stay straight.

The taper along the file's length is worth understanding as a feature. A round file is not one diameter — it narrows toward the point, so the effective cutting diameter depends on which part of the file is in the hole. That is how one file serves a range of sizes, and it is also why a hole filed near the point comes out differently from one filed near the heel.

The rotation rule is absolute: turn the file as you push it. A round file pushed straight cuts a flat, and a series of flats is a polygon.

Second cut is the middle grade — the one that does most of the work.
