The Simonds SIM73401500 is a round smooth file, American pattern, 10 inches.

Smooth is the finest of the American pattern grades and on a round file it is the finishing tool for an internal surface.

The sequence matters. A hole that needs opening gets a bastard round file, which removes material and leaves a rough, faceted bore. Then a second cut file evens it. Then a smooth file brings it to something that will actually take a shaft or seat a part — and none of the earlier steps can produce that surface, because coarse teeth cannot leave a fine one.

Skipping to the smooth file at the start does not work either. A smooth file removes almost nothing, and using it to open a hole is an afternoon's work that ends with a clogged file.

That is the whole logic of file grades and it is why three exist rather than one.

The rotation technique is critical on any round file: turn it a quarter turn or so per stroke as it is pushed. A round file pushed straight cuts a flat, and a series of flats is a polygon rather than a hole.

Round files taper toward the point, so one file covers a range of diameters.
