Simonds SIM73323000 Pattern American 12" Half Round Bd

The Simonds SIM73323000 is a 12 inch half round bastard file, American pattern.

Note that the source reads "Simonds Pattern: American, 12" Half Round Bd" — abbreviated, and missing the word file. Consistent with several rows in this range and worth correcting together.

At 12 inches this is a substantial half round, and size on a half round file means something it does not mean on a flat one.

On a flat file, length governs flatness — a long file bridges high spots rather than following hollows. That is still true here. But a half round file's curved face has a radius determined by the file's width and thickness, and a 12 inch half round has a large-radius curve. It physically cannot enter a tight internal curve.

So half round files are not a good-better-best ladder by size. They are a set of radii, and a shop working varied work needs several. The 4 inch in this range does what the 12 inch cannot, and vice versa.

The flat face on a file this size is a genuinely useful flat file in its own right.

Bastard is the coarse grade: stock removal, leaving work for a finer file.

Fit a handle. A file this size is pushed hard, and the tang is a bare spike.
