Simonds SIM73319500 Pattern American 8" Half Round Sec

The Simonds SIM73319500 is an 8 inch half round second cut file, American pattern.

Note the source data: "Simonds Pattern: American, 8" Half Round Sec" — Sec is an abbreviation for second cut and the word file is absent entirely. Several rows in this range share the problem. Expand them.

Second cut on a half round is the most generally useful file a shop can own, and this is close to the one file to have if there could only be one.

The reasoning stacks. The half round shape covers flat surfaces, concave curves, and the transitions between them — more geometry than any other single shape. Second cut is the middle grade, taking material at a working rate while leaving a surface that is frequently good enough to stop at. Eight inches is the general bench length.

None of those is the best at anything. A bastard file removes faster, a smooth file finishes better, a flat file is better on flats, and a round file is better in holes. But the combination handles more jobs than any other single file, which is why it is the one that wears out.

American pattern denotes the trade grades — bastard, second cut, smooth — rather than the finer numbered Swiss pattern system.

Fit a handle. The tang is a bare spike.
