Simonds SIM73317000 Pattern American 6" Half Round Bd

The Simonds SIM73317000 is a 6 inch half round bastard file, American pattern.

Note that the source reads "Simonds Pattern: American, 6" Half Round Bd" — the noun is missing and Bd is an unexpanded abbreviation for bastard. The same applies across several rows here. Worth fixing, because the product name is the thing customers search for.

The half round is the most useful single file shape, and the reason is that it is two files in one hand.

One face is flat. One face is curved. That covers flat surfaces, concave curves, and — the part that matters — the transition between them, where a flat file cannot reach into the curve and a round file cannot sit on the flat. Opening out a drilled hole, dressing an internal radius, fitting a curved part against a flat one: none of those work with anything else.

For anyone carrying a limited set, the half round is the file to have. It does most of what a flat file does and everything a flat file cannot.

At 6 inches the curved face has a modest radius, suiting smaller internal curves.

Bastard is the coarse grade: stock removal rather than finishing.

Files cut on the push stroke only. Lift on the return.

Fit a handle.
