Simonds SIM73315000 Pattern American 4" Half Round Bd

The Simonds SIM73315000 is a 4 inch half round bastard file, American pattern.

Note the source data: this row reads "Simonds Pattern: American, 4" Half Round Bd" — the word file does not appear, and Bd is an abbreviation for bastard. Several rows in this range have the same problem, with Sec standing in for second cut. Nobody searching a storefront for a half round bastard file will find any of them. These need expanding.

At 4 inches this is a small half round file and small is the point. The curved face's radius is a function of the file's size — a big half round file has a large-radius curve and a small one has a tight curve. That means the file has to match the radius being worked. A 12 inch half round cannot enter a small internal curve, and a 4 inch one is the tool that can.

Which is why a shop working varied work carries several sizes rather than one good file.

The half round shape gives a flat face and a curved face: flat work, concave curves, and the transitions between them in one tool.

Bastard is the coarse grade in the American pattern system: bastard, second cut, smooth.

Fit a handle. The tang is a bare spike regardless of size.
