Simonds SIM73274500 Flat Aluminum File 6" American

The Simonds SIM73274500 is a flat aluminum file, American pattern, 6 inches.

An aluminium file is a distinct tooth form and the reason it exists is the single most frustrating experience in hand filing.

Aluminium does not chip. It smears. Under a file tooth, aluminium behaves more like a soft plastic than a metal — it deforms, it sticks to the tooth, and it welds into the gullet. A conventional file in aluminium pins solid within a dozen strokes, and from then on it is dragging lumps of embedded aluminium across the work, scoring it deeply. The operator files harder, which pins it worse and scores it more.

Everyone who has filed aluminium with an ordinary file has watched this happen and concluded they were doing something wrong.

An aluminium file has deep, curved teeth with wide gullets and a chip breaker arrangement designed to shear the material cleanly and eject the chip rather than trap it. It stays clean.

At 6 inches this is a small file — aluminium work is frequently fitting and detail rather than heavy removal.

Chalk in the teeth helps any file in soft metal. A file card is the cure once pinning starts.

Applications include aluminium fabrication, castings, and fitting.
