Simonds SIM73256000 Flat Long Angle Lathe File 12" American

The Simonds SIM73256000 is a flat long angle lathe file, American pattern, 12 inches.

Long angle is the specification and it is worth explaining, because it is a real geometry rather than a name.

On a conventional file the teeth are cut at a steeper angle across the face. On a long angle lathe file they are cut at a shallower one, which changes what happens when the file meets rotating material.

Two consequences follow. First, more of each tooth is engaged at any moment, which means the file shears continuously rather than taking intermittent bites. Intermittent bites on a spinning workpiece is chatter, and chatter leaves a faceted surface that is worse than what you started with. Second, the shallow angle clears chips along the tooth rather than packing them, which matters because there is no stopping to clean a file on a running lathe.

The result is a smooth, true surface on turned work — the last step before polishing, taking out tool marks that a finishing pass could not.

At 12 inches this is the standard length for a lathe file: enough to span a bearing journal or a shaft section in a controlled stroke.

The safety practice is not optional. File left-handed, arm over the work, nothing loose, handle fitted.
