The Simonds SIM73255500 is a flat long angle lathe file, American pattern, 10 inches.

A lathe file is a file used on rotating work, and it is worth being direct about the fact that filing on a lathe is one of the more dangerous things done on one.

The hazard is the handle. A file has one end near the chuck and the operator's hands are on it. If the file catches — and it catches on the chuck jaws, on a key left in place, on anything proud — the work drives it, and it drives it into the operator. The recognised practice is to file left-handed, with the arm over the top of the work rather than reaching across the chuck, so nothing is in the path if it goes wrong. Sleeves rolled, no gloves, no loose clothing, and a handle fitted.

The long angle geometry is the specification. The teeth are cut at a shallower angle across the file than a conventional pattern, which does two things on rotating work: it presents a cutting edge continuously as the work turns past, and it shears rather than chatters. A conventional file on a lathe chatters and leaves a faceted surface.

That is why lathe files exist as a separate pattern rather than being ordinary files used on a lathe.
