Simonds SIM73244000 Magicut Flat Multi-Cut File 12" American

The Simonds SIM73244000 is a Magicut flat multi-cut file, American pattern, 12 inches.

At 12 inches this is the working length for a multi-cut, and length matters here for the usual reason: a long file bridges the high spots and cuts them down, where a short file drops into the hollows and follows the surface it was meant to flatten.

Multi-cut is the specification and it addresses soft metals. Aluminium, brass, lead, and soft alloys smear rather than chipping cleanly, and the smeared material lodges between a conventional file's teeth — pinning. A pinned file drags embedded metal across the work and scores it, and the operator files harder, which makes it worse. Anyone who has ruined a good bastard file on an aluminium job has met this.

A multi-cut tooth form is open enough that chips clear rather than wedge. It cuts soft metal fast and stays clean.

The rules that apply to any file apply here too. Cut on the push stroke only — dragging back under load rubs the teeth backwards and dulls them. Never oil it: oil holds swarf against the teeth. And a file cannot be sharpened, so it is a consumable rather than a tool.

Fit a handle. The tang is a bare spike.
