The Simonds SIM73243000 is a Magicut flat multi-cut file, American pattern, 8 inches.

Multi-cut is a different tooth form entirely from the bastard, second cut, and smooth files in this range, and it exists to solve one problem: soft metals destroy ordinary files.

The problem is pinning. Aluminium, lead, brass, and soft alloys do not produce clean chips — they smear and they lodge in the space between a file's teeth. Once a chip is embedded, every stroke drags it across the work and scores it. A conventional file in aluminium pins solid within a few strokes and stops being a file.

A multi-cut tooth form has a shallower, more open geometry with a chip-breaking arrangement that produces small chips and lets them clear rather than wedge. The file keeps cutting in material that would have loaded a bastard file immediately.

The result is faster removal in soft metals and a better surface, because the file is not dragging embedded metal.

That makes this a specialist rather than a general file, and it is the one people buy after ruining a conventional file on an aluminium job.

At 8 inches this is a bench file for work in a vice.
