A new file deserves a word, because most people ruin one in the first ten minutes.

A file arrives with its teeth at their sharpest and their most brittle — the points are fine and unsupported. Put a brand new bastard file onto hardened steel or onto a casting with sand still in the skin, and those points break off rather than cut. The file is permanently degraded and it never worked properly at all.

The traditional practice is to break a new file in on softer material first. A few strokes on brass or mild steel takes the extreme fragile tips off and leaves the teeth supported and durable. After that the file will handle harder work for years.

The related rule: keep files off castings until the scale is removed. Foundry sand embedded in a casting skin is abrasive enough to destroy a file's teeth in a single pass, which is why the first cut on a casting is taken with something expendable.
