Simonds SIM73232500 Second Cut File 8" American

The Simonds SIM73232500 is a second cut file, American pattern, 8 inches.

Note a gap in the source data: no shape is stated. The neighbouring part numbers in this sequence are flat files, and this is almost certainly a flat file too — but shape is the first thing a customer selects on, and a file listed without one cannot be chosen. Confirm before publishing. The same omission affects the 10 inch and 12 inch second cut listings in this range.

Second cut is the specification and it is the most useful grade in the three, which is why it is the one that runs out first.

The American pattern grades are bastard, second cut, and smooth. Bastard removes metal fast and leaves a surface that needs fixing. Smooth finishes beautifully and removes almost nothing. Second cut does both adequately — it takes material at a reasonable rate and leaves a surface that is often good enough to stop at.

That is why a shop with one file has a second cut file. It is the grade that handles the job that does not justify a sequence.

Where the sequence matters — a surface that must be flat and fine — all three get used in order, and skipping steps costs more time than it saves.

Fit a handle. The tang is a bare spike.
