The Simonds SIM73152500 is a mill smooth file, American pattern, 14 inches.

Smooth is the finest of the three American pattern grades — bastard, second cut, smooth — and on a mill file that combination is a specialist finishing tool.

The point is that mill files are already the smooth-cutting family, because they are single cut: continuous parallel ridges rather than a crosshatch, each shearing a broad shallow chip. A smooth-grade mill file takes that as far as a file goes. What it produces is close to a machined surface.

Which is why this is the draw filing file. Draw filing means holding the file crosswise across the work and pushing it along the length, and it is how a hand-finished surface gets genuinely flat and genuinely fine. A smooth mill file, drawn along a surface at 14 inches, leaves something that needs abrasive only if it needs a polish.

It is also the finishing file for an edge — the last pass on a blade after a bastard file has taken the damage out.

What it is not is a stock removal tool. Using a smooth file to remove metal takes an afternoon and clogs the file.
