Simonds SIM72758880 Maxi-Sharp File Set 3 pc Black American Paddle Handles

The Simonds SIM72758880 is a Maxi-Sharp file set with paddle handles, 3 pieces, black, American pattern.

The paddle handle is the specification and it is worth explaining, because handles on files are the thing everybody skips and this set does not.

A file's tang is a bare tapered spike. Used without a handle, a file that catches on the work drives that spike into the palm — one of the oldest and most preventable workshop injuries there is. Files are sold bare, handles are sold separately, and the handle never gets fitted. A set that arrives with handles already on removes the decision.

A paddle handle is flat rather than round, which suits a file used with a controlled push where the wrist needs to know the file's orientation without looking.

American pattern is the classification and it appears across this whole Simonds range. It denotes the general trade files, cut in the bastard, second cut, and smooth grades. The alternative is Swiss pattern — finer, more precisely made, numbered rather than named, and intended for toolmaking and jewellery. American pattern is the working file.

A three-piece set is the sensible entry: files work in sequence, coarse to fine, and a single file does half the job.

Applications include sharpening, metalwork, and general maintenance.
