DiversiTech Transformer 50A PM44450

The DiversiTech PM44450 is a 50 VA control transformer for HVAC and refrigeration control circuits.

Transformer protection is worth considering whenever one is replaced, because an unprotected control circuit short will destroy the transformer every time it occurs.

Many modern control boards incorporate a fuse in the 24 volt circuit precisely for this reason, and a blown control fuse is a far cheaper outcome than a failed transformer. Where a board has such a fuse, replacing it with the correct rating rather than a larger one preserves the protection.

Older equipment frequently has no protection at all, and on such systems an inline fuse holder added to the secondary is a worthwhile improvement, sized to the transformer's capacity.

Some transformers include an internal thermal protector that opens on overload and resets when cool. These produce a characteristic intermittent fault: the system runs, the transformer overheats, the control circuit drops out, and after a period everything works again. Recognising the pattern saves considerable diagnosis.

Where a transformer has failed, checking the control circuit for a short before energising the replacement is the necessary precaution.
