DiversiTech Transformer 40A PM43440

The DiversiTech PM43440 is a 40 VA control transformer for HVAC control circuits.

Primary voltage is the specification to confirm first when selecting a transformer, and it is less obvious than it appears because many transformers offer multiple primary taps.

A multi-tap transformer may accept 120, 208, 240, and sometimes 480 volts, with the appropriate primary lead connected and the others insulated and left unused. Connecting the wrong tap produces either a transformer that fails immediately, if the applied voltage exceeds the tap's rating, or a secondary voltage too low to operate the controls, if the tap is rated above the supply.

The second case is the more troublesome, because the equipment appears to have a control fault rather than a wiring error. A control circuit measuring perhaps 12 volts instead of 24 will not pull in contactors, and the symptom points at everything except the transformer.

Measuring both the applied primary voltage and the resulting secondary voltage confirms the connection is correct.

Unused primary leads must be individually insulated, since they carry induced voltage.

Applications include residential and commercial HVAC and refrigeration control circuits.
