DiversiTech 40VA Transformer PF4031OEM

The DiversiTech PF4031OEM is a 40 VA control transformer supplied as an original equipment style replacement.

Transformers fail in a small number of characteristic ways, and recognising them shortens diagnosis.

An open primary or secondary winding produces no output at all, and a resistance measurement identifies it directly.

A shorted turn produces a transformer that still works after a fashion but runs hot, draws excessive primary current, and eventually fails completely.

An overloaded transformer, one supplying more than its rating, runs hot and has a shortened life, and where an internal thermal protector is fitted it may open and reset repeatedly, producing intermittent control failures that correlate with demand.

A transformer damaged by a short in the control circuit is the most common failure of all, and it matters because replacing the transformer without finding the short simply destroys the replacement.

For that reason, a failed transformer warrants a check of the control circuit for a short to ground or between conductors before the new one is energised. A chafed conductor against sheet metal, a damaged thermostat cable, or a failed component are the usual causes.

Applications include residential and commercial HVAC and refrigeration control circuits.
