Nidec/Emerson Motor Direct Drive ECM 3/4 HP EZ-13

The Nidec/Emerson 5642 is an EZ-13 series direct drive ECM blower motor rated 3/4 horsepower for indoor blower replacement in furnaces, air handlers, and fan coil units.

Verifying airflow after fitting a universal ECM motor is the step that determines whether the installation is correct, and it cannot be inferred from the tap selected. Two practical methods are available.

In heating, measuring the temperature rise across the heat exchanger and comparing it against the range stamped on the furnace data plate gives a direct indication: a rise above the range means insufficient airflow, below it means too much. In cooling, measuring total external static pressure and comparing evaporator saturation temperature against expected values indicates whether airflow is in range.

Both take a few minutes and both catch the situation where a tap that seemed correct delivers airflow the equipment cannot tolerate. Given that an ECM motor is an expensive part and that incorrect airflow damages heat exchangers and evaporator coils, the verification is not optional.
