Nidec/Emerson Motor Direct Drive ECM 1/2-1/3H

The Nidec/Emerson 5862 is a direct drive ECM blower motor rated 1/3 to 1/2 horsepower for indoor blower replacement in residential furnaces, air handlers, and fan coil units.

Converting a PSC blower to an ECM motor removes the run capacitor from the circuit entirely, and the redundant capacitor should be disconnected and removed rather than left connected in the blower compartment. An ECM motor does not use it, and a capacitor left wired in place is a component that can fail in a circuit that no longer needs it.

The conversion also changes how the blower responds to duct restriction. A PSC motor slows as static pressure rises, reducing both airflow and its own power draw. A constant-torque ECM motor holds torque, which means it maintains more airflow against the same restriction and draws power to do so.

That is generally desirable, but it means a duct system with a serious restriction will be worked harder rather than allowed to limit itself. Measuring total external static pressure after the conversion is worthwhile.
