The Nicholson NIC05194N is a 14 inch half round bastard cut file.
Note that this catalogue also carries another 14 inch half round bastard file under a different part number, with full dimensional specifications. Two SKUs describing the same size, shape, and cut are worth reconciling — the difference is likely the tang, the handle, or a packaging quantity, and none of it is in the data.
The half round is the most useful single file shape and the reason is that it is two files. One face is flat, one is curved. That covers flat surfaces, concave curves, and the transitions between them — and the curved face is the only practical way to open out a drilled hole, dress an internal radius, or fit a curved part to a flat one.
At 14 inches this is a large file. Length governs flatness: a long file bridges high spots and cuts them down, where a short file drops into the low areas and follows the surface it was meant to correct.
Bastard is the coarsest of the three standard grades — bastard, second cut, smooth. It removes stock and leaves work for a finer file.
Fit a handle before use. The tang is a bare spike and a file this size is pushed hard.
Applications include heavy metalwork and fabrication.
