The Nicholson NIC04896N is a half round file, bastard cut, 0.20 inch thick, 0.75 inch wide, 8 inch long, hard stamped, steel.

Note a data error: the source lists overall length as 0.398 inch, overall width as 0.03 inch, and overall height as 0.008 inch on an 8 inch file. Those figures are impossible — an overall length of four-tenths of an inch on an eight-inch file describes nothing. The fields appear to be corrupted and need correcting at source.

The half round shape is the reason this file exists and it is genuinely two tools. One face is flat, one face is curved. That means a single file handles a flat surface, a concave curve, and — critically — the transition between them, which is where a flat file cannot reach and a round file cannot sit.

The curved face is what makes it the standard file for opening out a drilled hole, cleaning up an internal radius, or fitting a curved part to a flat one. Anyone who has tried to do that with a flat file understands.

Bastard is the coarse grade — for removing stock rather than finishing.

Fit a handle. The tang is a bare spike and a catching file drives it into the palm.
