The Mitchell Metal 43382 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 36 by 12 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

At 36 inches wide and only 12 inches high, this is a long, shallow grille sized for openings where width is available and height is not. Soffits, the space above doorways, and returns fitted between framing members without cutting them are the typical locations.

A grille this long requires fixing along its length rather than at the corners alone. A 36 inch span supported only at its ends will flex, and a flexing frame does not sit flat against the surface, leaving gaps at the centre through which air is drawn from the wall cavity rather than the room.

The proportion also affects free area. The frame occupies a greater share of a shallow grille than a square one, so the air passing capacity is somewhat less than the gross dimension implies. The manufacturer's published free area figure is the basis for sizing rather than the nominal dimensions.

The 672 series carries no filter frame, so the system filter must be located at the air handler.
