The DiversiTech 650-100 is an egg crate return air grille sized for a 24 by 24 inch T-bar ceiling module.

An egg crate grille uses an open lattice face with a high free area, typically far greater than a bar or louvred grille of the same dimensions. That open face is what makes it the standard choice for return air.

The reasoning is about pressure drop. Return grilles are frequently undersized in residential and light commercial systems, and an undersized return is one of the most common causes of high system static pressure, reduced airflow, poor equipment performance, and blower noise. Because return air must pass through the grille at whatever velocity the opening dictates, maximising free area for a given face size directly reduces the pressure drop and the noise the grille contributes.

An egg crate face also has minimal directional effect, which is appropriate for return air where the objective is simply to draw air from the space without imposing a pattern on it.

The 24 by 24 inch size drops into a standard suspended ceiling grid module, making installation straightforward in commercial ceilings.

Selecting return grille size on the basis of airflow and acceptable face velocity, rather than on what fits the available opening, is what prevents the noise and static pressure problems that undersized returns produce.
