Hart & Cooley 672 25X20 013980 White Return Air Grille

The Hart & Cooley 13980 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 25 by 20 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

The 672 series is a plain return grille without a filter frame, distinguished from the 673 filter grille by its shallow depth of roughly a third of an inch. It covers the return opening and provides the finished appearance, but the system filter is located elsewhere, normally at the air handler.

That distinction matters when specifying. Fitting a plain return grille in a system whose only filter location was intended to be the return leaves the equipment running unfiltered, and fitting a filter grille where a filter already exists at the air handler creates two filters in series, adding static pressure for no benefit. Establishing where the filter lives before selecting the grille avoids both.

The 25 by 20 inch size handles a substantial return airflow, appropriate for a primary return on a residential system or a large return in light commercial work.

Note that nominal and overall dimensions differ. The grille's overall face measures larger than the nominal size, since the flange overlaps the wall or ceiling opening, and it is the opening that must match the nominal dimension.
