The HD Grant PPDDR102424TB is a 24 by 24 inch perforated return air grille with a 10 inch round duct collar, for suspended T-bar ceiling installation.

The 10 inch collar carries substantially more airflow than the 8 inch version, which makes it the more common selection where a ducted return must handle a meaningful volume from a single ceiling position.

Collar sizing is the specification that determines whether the return performs. The grille face and the duct collar are two separate restrictions in series, and the smaller of the two governs. A generously sized perforated face connected to an undersized collar produces exactly the same problem as an undersized grille: high velocity, elevated pressure drop, and audible air movement at the ceiling. Because the collar is a round duct connection of fixed diameter, its velocity rises quickly with airflow.

Selecting the collar from the design airflow and an acceptable duct velocity, rather than from the size of duct that happens to be convenient, is what avoids a restrictive return.
