Milwaukee MIL48-22-1712 Tape Measure Compact 12ft Steel 1 Inch ABS Red/Black

The Milwaukee MIL48-22-1712 is a compact tape measure, 12 ft blade, 1 inch blade width, ABS case in red and black, steel blade in yellow, smooth spring driven retraction.

Compact is the specification and the twelve-foot length is the whole argument. Most tape measures are 25 ft because 25 ft covers most jobs — and most measurements taken in a day are under six feet, taken at arm's length, with a tape that is bulky, heavy, and living in a pouch because it will not sit in a pocket.

A 12 ft tape fits a shirt pocket. That means it is present when a measurement is needed rather than back at the bench, and a tape that is present gets used. For cabinetmakers, finish carpenters, service technicians, and anyone measuring small things frequently, that changes the tool from equipment into something carried.

What it gives up is standout and reach. A 1 inch blade at 12 ft has modest standout, and standout only matters when reaching across a room alone — which is not what a pocket tape is for.

Note that the 1 inch blade width stated here is plausible, where several other Milwaukee tapes in this catalogue list widths above 2 inches, which are not blade dimensions. Worth reconciling.

Applications include cabinetry, finish work, service, and assembly.
