The Metal Zinc DBBX2030-R6 is a 30 by 20 inch return air box in 30 gauge steel with R-6 insulation, sized for a large return grille.

At 30 by 20 inches this box serves a primary return on a substantial system, and sealing becomes proportionally more important as the component grows. A return box operates under negative pressure, so every unsealed seam and every gap at the duct connection draws air from the surrounding space rather than from the room. Where the box sits in an attic, that means drawing hot or cold unconditioned air, along with dust and insulation fibres, directly into the system upstream of the coil.

Leakage on the return side is more consequential than equivalent leakage on the supply side, because it introduces an unmetered load the equipment was never sized for, and because it bypasses the filter if the filter is at the grille.

Sealing means mastic or an appropriate tape on every seam and at the duct connection, applied to clean metal. Duct tape in the conventional sense is not suitable and will release within a few years.

The R-6 insulation limits heat transfer in unconditioned spaces and prevents condensation on the box exterior during cooling operation.

Applications include residential and light commercial return air installations in walls, ceilings, and attics.
