The Metal Zinc DBBX1224-R6 is a 24 by 12 inch return air box fabricated from 30 gauge steel with R-6 insulation.

A return air box provides the transition between a return grille at the wall or ceiling surface and the duct serving it. Without one, the return opening discharges into whatever cavity lies behind it, and that cavity becomes an unlined, unsealed section of the return path.

That arrangement is the source of a well documented set of problems. A wall or joist cavity used as a return plenum communicates with adjacent cavities, with the attic, and in exterior walls with the outdoors. Air drawn through it carries dust, insulation fibres, moisture, and unconditioned outdoor air directly into the system. Many jurisdictions now restrict or prohibit the practice, and where an existing system is found to rely on it, fitting a proper return box is the remedy.

The R-6 insulation limits heat transfer where the box sits in an unconditioned space, and attenuates noise travelling between the duct and the room.

30 gauge steel is light sheet metal appropriate to a component that carries no structural load but must hold its shape and remain sealed.

Applications include residential and light commercial return air installations in walls and ceilings. Seal all joints and the duct connection.
